Russia: Assassin sentenced for journalist's murder

Former police officer Dmitry Pavliutchenkov was found guilty and sentenced today to 11 years in a high security penal colony for the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya in 2006.

Politkovskaya was a Russian journalist who had American citizenship, as well as an author and human rights activist known for her opposition to the Chechen conflict and President of Russia Vadimir Putin.

The trial of five other accomplices who worked with Pavliutchenkov to observe and assassinate Politkovskaya is expected to begin in March next year.
