The Colombian Navy seized 343 kilograms of cocaine worth US$ 8.5 million from a fishing boat on Monday, bound for San Andres and Providencia, two islands in the Caribbean. Six men aboard were arrested.

According to a local newspaper, El Universal, the men said that they were fishing, but there is no fishing activity in the area. Additionally, the boat exuded strong chemical odors, according to the authorities.

The boat was taken to the Coast Guard Station in Cartagena, where drug-sniffing dogs found the cocaine hidden in the deck.

So far this year, the Navy has seized nearly seven tons of cocaine in operations against drug trafficking in the Caribbean.
