A Chinese official has been fired from his position as an internet regulator and expelled from the Communist Party on graft charges.

Gao Jianyun, who held a senior position in the International Communication and Information Office’s special taskforce for internet security and technology, became a target of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) in March, reports the South China Morning Post.

The CCDI alleges that Gao was using his position to seek huge bribes, reports The Economic Times. The CCDI’s statement added that Gao was supporting a mistress and child while  conspiring with a second suspect to obstruct the investigation, reports the Post.

While Gao appears to be a casualty of the anti-graft campaign initiated by President Xi Jinping, the president is also cracking down on internet corruption, misuse and censorship, reports Reuters. This was stepped up following revelations from former National Security Administration analyst Edward Snowden of internet snooping by the US, says The Economic Times. Gao’s taskforce was a vital component of this campaign.

According to the statement of the CCDI, the case has been handed over to the judiciary for prosecution.
